On June 6th, 1944 men of the 82nd Airborne 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment made their first combat jump. Badly scattered at night and coming “Down to earth” into hostile enemy territory of Normandy, France made even more difficult because of the flooded low lands. In spite of the enormous difficulties they adapted moving out to begin the task of defeating the enemy. Their major mission securing the causeways to link up with the Allied beach landing. By the evening of the 6th, men of the 507th held key positions along the Merderet River and the important causeway at La Fi’ere Manor. Finally after 33 days of action they were relieved on July 8th, 1944.
